The higher the refractive index (RI), the more a designer can do with light. Less light leaks out through the back of the stone, and as light leaves through the top, the facets fan it out much more widely. Neighbouring facets end up “seeing” very different things — a bright light or your own shadow — giving crisper, higher-contrast patterns.
