Each design targets a specific outline shape — round, oval, pear, cushion, and many more. The shape filter lets you narrow results to exactly the outline you want to cut.
Shapes also have variants: truncated (corners clipped for durability), mirrored (symmetric left-to-right), and cushioned (softened corners). Expand the "Variants" section to filter by these modifiers.
Because outline geometry affects how light interacts with the pavilion, each shape has its own performance envelope. A brilliant round and an elongated marquise face very different optical challenges — so comparing scores across shapes is most meaningful within the same category.
The Refractive Index (RI) describes how much a gem material bends light. Every mineral has a characteristic RI — for example quartz is 1.54, topaz 1.62, sapphire 1.77, and diamond 2.42.
A faceting design that performs brilliantly at one RI may be mediocre at another, because the critical angle for total internal reflection changes with the material. That is why each design in the store is optimized for a specific RI.
Select the RI that matches your rough material so you only see designs purpose-built for that stone. If you are unsure, check the gem material's RI in any mineralogy reference.
Brightness measures the total light returned to the observer, normalized against a Hearts & Arrows reference. Values above 1.0 outperform the benchmark.
In gemstone optics, brightness and contrast are fundamentally in tension. A design that maximizes total light return can easily produce a "watery" stone with almost no visible pattern. Conversely, pushing contrast too hard may sacrifice light return.
The best designs live in the upper-right of a brightness-vs-contrast plot: high light return and strong alternating light–dark patterning — what the human eye perceives as "life" and "fire".
Use this range slider to set a minimum brightness threshold and filter out designs that fall below your requirements.
