Light, Geometry, and Oddball Experiments in Gemstone Design

Stories and visual experiments exploring what happens when software tools meet a real 96-index faceting wheel and a 10× loupe.

A quick note: I’m not a trained gemologist. No GIA diploma, no mineralogy degree, and no traditional bench apprenticeship. Just a software engineer who fell down the rabbit hole of faceting machines, geometry, and how light bounces around inside crystals.

ARE THE DAYS OF HUMAN GEM DESIGN OVER?

In 1902, tracing one light ray across one glass lens surface by hand took printed 7-decimal logarithm tables and five to ten minutes of arithmetic (meaning a single 40-ray design check ate a full work-week). In 1983, a Dutch aerospace fluid-dynamics code ended the longest winning streak in yachting history. Multiply 20 gem shapes by 8 refractive indices, 39 crowns, and 5 aspect ratios, and you get 124,800 niches (500 work-years even at one new diagram every single day). Are the days of human gem design over? Look at the evidence and decide for yourself.

8 TIPS FROM OUR OPTICAL EXPERIMENTS

A quick, no-fluff cheat sheet of 8 practical gemstone design and cutting tips distilled from our optical studies: why a 2% girdle beats a knife-edge, why large flat tables sleep on fire, how total depth acts as an optical lever arm, why static ASET blue misleads, and how to park your cuts on a forgiving bench plateau.

FROM PIXEL BLINKS TO VIRTUAL FACETS: HOW SCINTILLATION V3 MEASURES GEMSTONE SPARKLE

How do you teach a computer to see real gemstone sparkle instead of a tall dome sliding across the screen or flat glare off the table? Here is how Scintillation V3 replaces V1 pixel blinks and V2 block averaging with overhead spotlights, tilted crown glints, and virtual-facet flash maps.

THE GIRDLE HEIGHT PARADOX: WHAT 13,248 GPU RAYTRACES REVEAL ABOUT BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, ENTROPY, AND FIRE

What does the height of a gemstone's vertical 90-degree girdle cylinder actually do to the photons bouncing inside? Across 13,248 GPU raytraced 3D stones spanning 0.0% knife-edges to 20.0% drums, Brightness peaks at 0.0% in 95% of stones while Contrast Density, Shannon Entropy, Scintillation, and Dispersive Fire rise across thin girdles to form the 1.5% to 3.0% optical sweet spot.

BEYOND THE FLAT TABLE: ALL 39 CROWN ARCHITECTURES IN CRYSTAL

For a century, nearly every faceted gemstone wore the same flat octagonal table window framed by radial star and bezel triangles. Here is how four mathematical flat-lap compilers unlock all 39 canonical crown architectures in solid crystal, illustrated with engine-projected vector SVG blueprints for every architecture and path-traced studio stones.

MAKING CONTRAST COMPUTABLE: SOBEL GRADIENTS, DENSITY VS. INTENSITY, AND THE ASET BLUE MYTH

For decades, gem contrast was either an unquantified artistic vibe or reduced to counting blue ink in a static 0-degree ASET map (which correlates at r = -0.174 with real 3D contrast across 4,799 cuts). Here is how a 19-angle GPU Sobel operator separates fine spatial weave (Contrast Density) from steep optical cliffs (Contrast Intensity).

PLAYING WITH PRISMS: WHAT OUR GPU FIRE DETECTOR REVEALED ABOUT GEMSTONE DISPERSION

What happens when you strip away all body color and use our 3-wavelength, 19-angle GPU Fire Detector as a laboratory instrument? Four experiments reveal why Cubic Zirconia (RI 2.15) beats Diamond (RI 2.42) by 57% in fire, what our single-RI pipeline ignores about mineral dispersion, why flat tables only wake up as tilted cross-prisms, and how internal path length drives a 4.9x spread in fire across colorless stones.

ALL THIRTY-TWO SHADES OF GREY: BRINGING SHANNON ENTROPY TO GEMSTONE DESIGN

Brightness and spatial contrast share a hidden blind spot: a crystal flashing strictly between pitch-black voids and blown-out white glare can score huge on both while speaking in only two shades. Here is how 32-bin, 19-tilt Claude Shannon Information Entropy measures all thirty-two shades of grey inside a gemstone, what 4,799 catalog cuts reveal, and why Entropy pairs with Spatial Contrast.

SACRIFICIAL GEOMETRY: HOW 44 CAM SYSTEM MACROS CARVE ANY FANCY OUTLINE

Why does almost every non-round gemstone program start with a one-line function like RectTr(), Oval(), Pear(), or PentCushTr()? Here is what a CAM preform macro actually does on a physical mast machine, why unequal radial girdle distances require a temporary sacrificial cone, and how 44 open-box FSL functions carve any fancy silhouette.

ACCIDENTALLY TURING-COMPLETE: WRITING A BRAINFUCK INTERPRETER IN FSL TO CARVE "HELLO WORLD" ONTO A CRYSTAL CUBE

Warning for normal gem cutters: this post is a tongue-in-cheek computer-science joke for programming nerds, not a real bench diagram (please do not cut 350 pixels onto a cube!). FSL has no loops, forbids array mutation, caps recursion at 500 frames, and only slices infinite flat planes, yet 160 lines of pure FSL are enough to run a Turing-complete Brainfuck VM and carve HELLO WORLD onto solid sapphire.

Here are three static visual deep dives into benchmark performance, the Moissanite Fresnel hook across all 8 refractive indices, and why a gemstone's base outline shape governs contrast.

EXECUTABLE INTENT: WHY A GEMSTONE IS A PROGRAM, NOT A STATIC MESH

Static 3D meshes and frozen decimal depth tables record what a finished shape looks like, not why any facet stopped. Here is why FSL treats a gemstone as an executable sequence of causal meetpoints, edge-proportion invariants, and optimizer guardrails, complete with architectural drawings and path-traced failure modes.
